Crime Prevention Tips
Learning how to prevent crime is the first step to crime reduction in our neighborhood. Once criminals realize that we know how to protect ourselves and that this neighborhood is watching each other’s backs, they’ll naturally start going somewhere else. Together we can improve our neighborhood through these simple steps!!!
- Secure your home using these tips from DPD - Residential Security Manual and Preventing Home Burglaries
- Be AWARE of your surroundings. Be alert of what is going on around you and of any suspicious behavior. Don’t be afraid to report something fishy to the Crime Watch Committee.
- Keep your car, home, gates & sheds locked at all times. The most common crimes in our neighborhood are BMV’s (Burglary of a Motor Vehicle). Many of these BMV crimes are completely preventable because they occur on “UNLOCKED” vehicles.
- Make sure to take all items out of your car.
- Ensure your car is parked in garage or driveway. Try not to park on the street, if possible.
- Check out the lighting around your car and home. Make sure that the areas are well lighted at night.
- Make sure your house numbers are visible from the street. If you can’t see the house number, the fire, police or ambulance might have difficulty finding your house in an emergency. If your numbers are at the curb but cars are always parked there consider adding visible numbers to your house also.
- Consider installing dusk-to-dawn lighting sensors. Darkness has a way of inviting unwanted people.
- Keep shrubs trimmed especially around doors & windows, to eliminate potential hiding places for intruders.
- Keep your garage doors closed & locked when you are not in the garage or in sight of the garage door. Many thefts happen while people are doing yard work and leave their garage doors open while they are in the front yard or in other areas out of sight from the garage door.
- Have neighbors pick up newspapers & mail if you are out of town. If you know you will be out of town, let your block captain or the CW committee know. It is a great way to help us all look out for each other.
- Consider having an alarm system installed. If you have an alarm, make sure your signs are visible and not hidden by bushes or plants.
